By March 12, Cinemark, AMC and National CineMedia stocks had all fallen by over 35% since the beginning of the month.181 Cineworld, the worlds second-largest cinema chain, warned on March 12, when multiple films pushed back their releases, that extended disruption and continuing falling stock could cause the company to collapse.180182 In August 2020, California announced a new color-coded tier system that would allow restrictions to be lifted in specific counties based on health metrics, effective August 31.183184 Cinemas would be allowed to operate at limited capacity if a county is in the red Substantial tier or better. This would scale from at 25%100 patrons whichever is smaller in red counties, to 50%200 patrons in orange Moderate counties, and 50% with no hard maximum in counties under the lowest yellow Minimal tier. The majority of the state was still in the purple Widespread tier at the onset of the system, where cinemas remained closed. These health orders can still be superseded with stricter rules by local officials.185

Early evolution : The earliest films were simply one static shot that showed an event or action with no editing or other cinematic techniques. Typical films showed employees leaving a factory gate, people walking in the street, the view from the front of a trolly as it traveled a city’s Main Street. According to legend, when a film showed a locomotive at high speed approaching the audience, the audience panicked and ran from the theater. Around the turn of the 20th century, films started stringing several scenes together to tell a story. The filmmakers who first put several shots or scenes discovered that, when one shot follows another, that act establishes a relationship between the content in the separate shots in the minds of the viewer. It this relationship that makes all film storytelling possible. By the early 1920s, most films came with a prepared list of sheet music to be used for this purpose, and complete film scores were composed for major productions.

The impact of a reviewer on a given films box office performance is a matter of debate. On January 31, Enter the Fat Dragon also premiered online.80 Lost in Russia was streamed by 180 million accounts in the first three days after its release Chinas highest-grossing film and the highest-grossing non-English film ever was 2017s Wolf Warrior 2, which had sold a total of over 160 million tickets worldwide.81 At the beginning of February, American films set to premiere in China over February and March were officially canceled.80 Chinese media companies began making more films free online through January.82 Asian markets also saw Chinese and Hong Kong film distributors cancel exports over the Lunar New Year holiday, including for the films Vanguard, Detective Chinatown 3, The Rescue, and Legend of Deification Taiwanese film Do You Love Me As I Love You had its Asian release moved to April.83 Cinemas in Asian countries without public restrictions have been increasing hygiene measures, with the spokesperson for one chain saying that they added more hand sanitizer dispensers, performed temperature checks on staff and moviegoers, cleaned facilities more frequently, and displayed public health warnings on the movie screens.83 The Lunar New Year holiday is a large market for film releases across Asia, but was stunted in 2020 as the outbreak began rapidly spreading over this period of time.83
